If you play Scrabble, Literati, Lexulous, Wordscraper, Words with Friends or WordFeud, Lexifind will show you, on the full board for that game, every word that can be played from your current rack of letters to your current game board. It will also allow you to check a particular word to see if it is in your presently-selected list of words.
Please see our new VIDEO DEMO by positioning your mouse over the first of the four dots above and then clicking the link at the *top* of the video (after you start it) to view it on YouTube.
Once installed, this app runs WITHOUT requiring an INTERNET CONNECTION. There is NO EXTERNAL WEB SITE required; this app runs on your own PC or Chromebook, anytime, any place. As new versions become available, it will automatically update whenever you happen to be online.
NOTE: You must have Google's Chrome browser to install any of the thousands of apps in this Chrome Web Store. If you are visiting here in a browser other than Chrome, please click the "Download Google Chrome" link at the top of this page to install Chrome now, and when Chrome appears, re-visit this page in Chrome. Once you click, installation is completely automatic, only takes a minute, and installing Chrome does not require you to give up your present browser; it just gives you another choice. We use Chrome at Goalstate, and believe it to be the fastest and most secure of all the leading browsers.
If you do not have access to the Chrome Browser or Web Store on your mobile device, you can obtain a later and improved version of this app for Android devices by visiting the page for Goalstate's FullBoard 11+ Word Game Helper on the Google Play app store.
This free version has all of the core capabilities of the corresponding full version except that the number of rack letters that can be entered, and the number of letters that can be entered to check if a challenged word is valid, are each limited to six letters. Advanced features like the ability to specify that certain rack letters are to be played or retained are also not included in the free version.
If you would like to go straight to using the latest full version, which does not have these limitations, you can visit the following Web Store page to buy the full version for $1.99:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hcnmokmdcbpnhkjhadagemfebnecljlf
The Web store offers a 30 minute testing period during which you can receive a full refund if for any reason you are not satisfied with the app.
Word lists supported (both for finding words, and for checking them to resolve a challenge) include TWL (The Scrabble Tournament Word List for North America), SOWPODS (the Scrabble list for English-speaking countries outside North America) and OSPD4 (the U.S. School Scrabble word list). These extensive Scrabble dictionary lists, with their hundreds of thousands of words, can also be used to find words for other word games.
Just select the word list you would like to use, then select the game you are playing. The board for that game, with all bonus squares (double and triple letter and word), will appear.
You might start by clicking on the rack and typing in all of the letters on your rack of letters to be played. Lexifind will immediately use these to find every word that can be played to your present board. Any words that can be made (including bingo words that use all letters) will be shown one at a time on the board, and you can move through the words using a slider bar located just below the board. As you move through the words, they will appear on the board in the positions to which they can be played.
Next, you might click on the game board and type in any letters that have already been played during your present game. If you are only interested in looking at a particular corner of the board (for instance, the area around a triple word bonus square), you might decide to only enter the letters in that area; the amount of information provided is completely up to you. As soon as you add or remove letters on your board or on your rack, Lexifind will build new words by playing from your new rack around the new board letters, and the list of results will update without further prompting - you don't even need to ask! The order in which you enter or remove letters is unimportant.
Because there may be thousands of possible words, Lexifind allows you to sort your results by their resulting score, in alphabetic order, or by their position on the board. In addition, you may select a board square of particular interest (e.g., a triple word bonus square) to move all words that cover that square to the front of your result list. You can change this board square and instantly see the results that pertain to the new square that you have selected.
The overall effect is to provide a savant-like ability to see every word that can be played to your Scrabble or other game board. Little-known Scrabble words, such as those having a Q but no U, or that consist entirely of vowels or of consonants, will be generated whenever and wherever they can be placed on the board, making this word finder a fantastic tool for building your game-playing skills. You can use Lexifind while playing against robots online, or against friends who are also using the program (so that you are not cheating) trying to find the best word on your own and then consulting the Lexifind solver to see how well you have done.
Using Lexifind will also improve your vocabulary; especially your knowledge of two- and three-letter words that are key to forming "crosses" in which multiple words are made during a single play. Learning theory indicates that vocabulary picked up in the context of actual activities such as game play is better absorbed and more effectively oriented for use than words picked up by rote memorization. And it is certainly a lot more fun to learn new words by using a word generator during game play than it is to memorize long lists of tiresome words!
Support for even more word games will probably be added as the application evolves. In the meantime, in addition to the five word games currently supported, Lexifind also supports a "generic" game board without any bonus squares, for which each letter counts as a single point.
We hope that you enjoy using Lexifind, and that it will help to improve both your game play and your general knowledge of words!
