Psychological and Neurolinguistic studies demonstrate to increase the percentage of retention and usage of words in the right way and in the right context (what's also known as language mastery*) is dependent of repetition.
The best way to acquire a bigger lexicon/vocabulary is not to read the dictionary. The best way is to learn them on the context you found them and to use them from then onward repeatedly in a spaced manner.
* Language mastery is the correct usage of a language's grammar to communicate the meaning you want to another party. For these you need to have wide range of words you can command at will and use these like a native speaker so you can express yourself freely.
